2018

The fifth Mapping the Magazine conference will be held at Columbia College Chicago, July 25-27, 2018. The location is 624 S. Michigan Ave., Chicago. The security guard will direct you to the 3rd floor library room.

The full schedule can be viewed here.

Plan to be on campus during the following times:

  • July 25: 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. Dinner on your own.
  • July 26: 9:30 a.m. to 5:30 p.m. Dinner together at Majani (see “Conference Dinner”)
  • July 27: 9:30 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. Post-conference Soiree hosted by Northwestern University.

Every day begins with coffee and light snacks and an opportunity to socialize. During the conference, lunches and snacks will be provided. The only cost to presenters is the Thursday evening dinner ($30).

As in the past, the conference aims to create an intimate meeting of international magazine scholars from many disciplines (Media and Communications, Journalism, Gender and Cultural Studies, Sociology, Linguistics, English, History, Visual Communications, and so on) who are interested in exploring the current state of magazine research and possibly developing collaborative research projects. Papers will be delivered sequentially over the three days, not concurrently in separate streams. Conference delegates are asked to commit to attending all papers.

The organizing committee includes Sharon Bloyd-Peshkin, Columbia College Chicago; Tim Holmes, Cardiff University; Kevin Lerner, Marist College; Susan Currie Sivek, Linfield College; Miglena Sternadori, Texas Tech University; and Charles Whitaker, Northwestern University.

Sponsoring organizations/institutions are the AEJMC Magazine Media Division, Columbia College Chicago and Northwestern University.
