Celiana Azevedo
Celiana Azevedo holds a PHD and master’s degree in Communication Sciences specialization in Study of Media and Journalism at the Faculdade de Ciências Sociais e Humanas (UNL). She is Invited Assistant Professor at the Universidade Nova de Lisboa (FCSH-UNL) and at the Instituto Politécnico de Setúbal (ESE-IPS). She is an integrated researcher from the Instituto de Comunicação da Universidade Nova de Lisboa – ICNOVA; She participated in 4 projects as a researcher in the areas of Social Sciences with emphasis in Communication Sciences. The areas of her interest are mainly information and communication technologies, audience, intergenerational solidarity, generations, gerontology, history of journalism and cultural journalism.
Sharon Bloyd-Peshkin is a Professor of Journalism in the Communication Department at Columbia College Chicago. Her areas of scholarly interest include how fact-checking is changing in the digital age, 20th-century magazines, and solutions journalism. A former magazine editor and former head of the Magazine Media Division of the Association for Education in Journalism and Mass Media, Sharon is the co-editor of Curating Culture: How 20th Century Magazines Influenced America (Rowman & Littlefield, 2021). She has been on the organizing committee for Mapping the Magazine 5, 6, and 7.
Sofia P. Caldeira is an PhD Auxiliar Researcher at CICANT. She holds a Communication Sciences PhD from Ghent University, Belgium (2020), funded by the Portuguese Foundation for Science and Technology (FCT). Her research focuses primarily on social media, self-representation practices, politics of gender representation, everyday aesthetics, and feminist media studies. Sofia’s research has been published in journals such as Social Media + Society, Feminist Media Studies, and Information Communication & Society. She currently serves as Vice-chair of ECREA’s Digital Culture and Communication section.
Daniel Cardoso, PhD (they/them/their) holds a PhD in Communication Sciences by the NOVA University, and is a Research Fellow at the Department of Sociology at Manchester Metropolitan University, UK, and a part of RCASS and its Gender and Sexuality Research Group. They remain associated with the LUSOFONA University, in Lisbon, where they taught for ten years. They have published on Archives of Sexual Behavior, Porn Studies, Sociological Research Online, Sexual and Relationship Therapy, The Journal of Sexual Medicine, among others. They have co-founded the Non-Monogamies and Contemporary Intimacies Conference and have published chapters in Encyclopaedias, scientific and general outreach books. Carla Cerqueira holds a PhD in Communication Sciences – specializing in
Communication Psychology from the University of Minho, Portugal
(2012). Currently, she is an Assistant Professor at Lusófona University and a
researcher at CICANT – The Centre for Research in Applied Communication,
Culture, and New Technologies. Her research interests include gender,
feminism, intersectionality, NGOs, and media studies. She integrates diverse
national and international research projects are the principal investigator of the project “FEMGlocal – Glocal feminist movements: interactions and
contradictions and the project “Network
Voices: Women’s participation in development processes”.
Aileen Gallagher is a former senior editor for New York Magazine, where she shared several National Magazine Awards with her colleagues, including General Excellence Online. Gallagher joined the Newhouse faculty in 2010. Her research interests are digital editorial and journalism education, and she publishes and speaks regularly on these topics. A nationally recognized expert on the magazine industry, she has been quoted by the New York Times, CNN, Marketplace, WWD, Bloomberg, and the Associated Press, among others. She continues to work as a freelance editor and writer for national publications, including The Washington Post, Slate, New York Magazine, and Vulture.
Steve Hill, is the course leader of the MA Multimedia Journalism course at Westminster University, London, UK. Prior to joining Westminster in 2015, he lectured at Southampton Solent University. He has worked in technology and business journalism for over 20 years and has written for the Independent, Sunday Express, New Statesman, New Media Age, and Web Designer magazine among many other print and online publications. He has also appeared as a pundit on the BBC News Channel, Sky News, ITN, and numerous radio outlets and has written books about technology. During the late 1990s and early 2000, he reported extensively on the dot-com boom and bust as senior editor at Internet Magazine at EMAP in London. He holds postgraduate qualifications in journalism, is a fellow of the HEA (Higher Education Academy), and is currently studying for a PhD. He also sits on the committee of the AJE (Association for Journalism Education).
Media specialist, educator, speaker, and writer, Mary Hogarth MD of The Magazine Expert Ltd, has more than 20 years of industry experience. Mary has a fractional post as a Senior Lecturer at Bournemouth University and is a HEA Senior Fellow. Her consultancy practice specializes in new title launches, audience intelligence, editorial development, and business strategies. Having written numerous articles and three books, Mary is currently working on a PhD investigating alternative business models in magazine publishing.
Sónia Lamy holds a Ph.D. in Communication Sciences from Nova University Lisbon. She is an Assistant Professor at Lusófona University and a researcher in CICANT, where she is the Assistant Scientific Coordinator of the Observatory for the Media in Lusophony. Sónia is the Principal Investigator in the European project Erasmus + “Fake the system: EU tools against disinformation” (2020-3-IT03-KA205-019960). And she is also co-PI of the research project “IM Lab (Intersectionality Media Lab) – The Joacine Katar Moreira Case Study” (COFAC/CICANT/PhDResearcher/2020) and integrates the research team working on the FCT Project “Glocal feminist movements: interactions and contradictions” (PTDC/COM-CSS/4049/2021). Sónia Lamy was also a journalist for about ten years. She is dedicated to the research of journalism studies, news sources, NGOs, and more recently, Intersectionality and Media Literacy.
Sharon Maxwell Magnus is a Principal Lecturer in Journalism and Head of the Media Group at the University of Hertfordshire. She was also an editor for B2C and consumer magazines and has won three national awards for her journalism on careers and health. She has worked for magazines across the Hearst group and is currently a judge for the national SHINE awards for school online, print, and podcast magazine formats. Her research interests include advocacy in magazines, the relationship between commercial women’s magazines and feminism, and teaching and learning for employability.
Jorge Pedro Sousa (Oporto, Portugal, 1967) is a full professor at University Fernando Pessoa (Oporto, Portugal). He obtained his PhD in Communication in 1997 from the University of Santiago de Compostela (Spain). His research focuses on the field of the history of journalism.
Carla Rodrigues Cardoso holds a PhD in Communication Sciences by NOVA University. She is Assistant Professor at Lusófona University, where she coordinates the Master in Journalism and Media Studies and the BA in Communication and Journalism, as well as organizes the annual Communication and Journalism conferences. She is the Principal Researcher of the research project IM Lab (Intersectionality Media Lab) – The Joacine Katar Moreira Case Study (COFAC/CICANT/PhDResearcher/2020) and integrates the research team working on the FCT Project “Towards a history of journalism in Portugal” (PTDC/CCI-JOR/21844/2017). She has been analyzing the topic of news magazines for more than 20 years and has been on the organizing committee of the international conference Mapping the Magazine (editions 6 and 7).
Dora Santos-Silva is an assistant professor at NOVA University of Lisbon – School of Social Sciences and Humanities (NOVA FCSH). She coordinates the Journalism Master’s degree, the postgraduation course in Cultural Communication and Creative Industries, and the Observatory for the Media Innovation (Obi.Media). She is a researcher at ICNOVA focusing on journalism innovation, digital narratives, and creative industries. Magazines are one of her (healthier) obsessions.
Catherine M. Staub is the Fisher-Stelter Chair of Magazine Media and a Professor in the School of Journalism and Mass Communication at Drake University. Beginning July 1, 2022, Staub will serve as Dean of Drake School of Journalism and Mass Communication. Staub’s research examines the relationship between brand media and journalism, and the resulting journalistic and ethical implications. Her work also explores the influential role of niche magazines in defining and reinforcing cultural norms and industry practices. In addition to research, teaching, and her upcoming administrative role, Staub serves as a judge for the annual American Society of Magazine Editors ASME Ellie Awards.
