2016

  • change to past tense

The fourth Mapping the Magazine conference was held at the University of Sydney, Department of Media and Communications, from December 12 – 14, 2016.

As in the past, the conference aimed to create an intimate meeting of international magazine scholars from many disciplines (Media and Communications, Journalism, Gender and Cultural Studies, Sociology, Linguistics, English, History, Visual Communications…) who were interested in exploring the current state of magazine research and possibly developing collaborative research projects.

As in the past, papers were delivered sequentially over the three days, not concurrently in separate streams. Conference delegates were asked to commit to attending all papers.

There were no registration fees. There was a desk with nametags in the MECO foyer. As the first keynote began at 9am Monday December 12, attendees were asked to arrive between 8.30 and 9am.

There was no printed program. Conference delegates could download the program from the conference website.

Visitors to any of the conference sessions were welcome.

We were privileged and excited to have two key figures in the field of magazine studies as keynote speakers:

David Abrahamson, Medill School, Northwest University, United States
‘The Future of the Magazine Form: Print Continuity and Digital Transformation’
Tim Holmes, School of Journalism, Media and Cultural Studies, Cardiff University, United Kingdom
‘“…of divers kind…” People, Platforms and Purpose in Magazineland’

The organising committee – Megan Le Masurier, Fiona Giles, Rebecca Johinke (University of Sydney) and Tim Holmes (Cardiff University) – would like to thank the School of Literature, Arts and Media (SLAM) and the Faculty of Arts and Social Sciences (FASS) at the University of Sydney for their generous financial support.
